Smoke and Related Odors

Smoke and Related Odors

Did you know? Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.

Most exposure to secondhand smoke occurs in homes and workplaces. Secondhand smoke harms children and adults, and the only way to fully protect nonsmokers is to eliminate smoking in all homes, worksites and public places, according to the CDC.

In children, secondhand smoke can cause the following:

  • Ear infections
  • More frequent and severe asthma attacks
  • Respiratory symptoms (coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath)
  • Respiratory infections (bronchitis and pneumonia)
  • A greater risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

In adults who have never smoked, secondhand smoke can cause:

  • Heart disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Stroke

While the CDC says separating smokers from nonsmokers, opening windows or using air filters does not prevent people from breathing secondhand smoke, the proper air purification system may help protect your clothes and furnishings from the lingering smelly effects of cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke.
